The Golden Rock Community Resource Centre, opened 10th February 2018, was the idea of the Deputy Prime Minister of Barbados, Santia Bradshaw.
Rather than having kids roam the neighbourhood, Santia Bradshaw chose to put systems in place to allow the children in St Michael South East (SMSE) to attend summer camp at the Golden Rock Community Resource Centre.
Together with a team of amazing volunteers, Adriana Waithe, Programme Coordinator, set about providing opportunities for the kids to learn, play and interact safely, while giving them tons of memorable moments. In just four weeks, the programme taps into the kids’ creative talents, unlocks an interest in agriculture and healthy living, tours a number of attractions across the island, provides mentoring, and teaches life skills.
The centre has a small computer room with four PCs, which can be a bit of a squeeze with kids sitting 2 to a chair. Outside is a space where kids can play, dance and socialize.
Having visited the centre myself, I am so impressed with the volunteers’’ efforts in providing activities for the kids.
The Camp isn’t without its challenges, but when people are united by a common purpose, they will always find ways to make things work. And the foundation will be doing all it can to provide equipment to help the kids.
